After our Indian Adventure, and with assurance from Liz and Mike, we were ready to embark on our first trip to Japan. We have worked out our preferred style of travelling which is just the two of us wandering about getting a feel of the place, with minimal luggage. I booked the tickets in January and then realised that U3A holidays would coincide with peak cherry blossom time, so I quickly got onto our accommodation bookings. Once they were done, we were ready to get a 14 day Rail Pass.
I really enjoyed living the trip vicariously, thinking of minor details and making an itinerary in the style of the Indian Adventure and also a train document which was very useful as we found that reserving seats on trains also gave us tickets directing us to the train, car and seat. the other useful things we got with the rail pass were Pasmo cards for transport and a pocket modem which kept us connected. Most of our accommodation had good free wifi but this was a bonus. Cash was readily available at ATMs at covenience stores which we used a lot for food, beer and wine.
